Products Produced in the Kern Valley for Those Who Live in the Kern Valley
Onyx Farmers Market Update!
Thank you to everyone who is embracing our new seasonal market with gusto!
The Onyx Farmers Market began operating on June 1 and is open 7 days a week, 8am to 6pm. This Market is sponsored by the Kern Valley Growers Association and is seeing traffic from locals and tourists who drive by on HWY 178 and see the signs to turn onto Doyle Ranch Road.
These first weeks the Onyx Farmers Market has operated as a certified “farmers” market, only selling “produce” grown in our valley.
A fundraising effort has been underway to add an additional “open market” permit to allow other vendors to participate. These are vendors who produce foods with a Cottage Food Permit, such as candy, jams, jellies and breads…and crafters and artists who create jewelry, ceramics and photography.
Volunteers have supported this effort by baking for bakesales, sitting at the table and selling baked goods and making personal donations. The Kern Valley Growers Association (KVGA) has made the final monetary donation to cover the necessary fees to acquire this permit and given the paperwork to Kern County to certify.
We are told the permit will be issued within a week. Congratulations to everyone who has donated the significant time and energy it has taken to get this additional permit in place for our vendors. Now our customers will have even more selection to choose from!
At the July Kern Valley Growers Association board meeting, the table fee at Onyx Farmers Market was set to be the same as at Lakeshore Farmers Market; $10/week.
At Lakeshore the market is only open one day for four hours (Saturday).
At Onyx Farmers Market, the market is open 7 days/week from 8-6...
so the $10/week opens up more hours for the fee. The $10/week
will be collected by Jake Rudnick, Market Manager at Onyx Farmers Market.
Just like at Lakeshore Farmers Market, Certified Producers and
Cottage Food Permit holders will need an embossed copy of their permits
with them when they sell and a resale permit if their product requires it.
At Lakeshore last week we had 115 customers. Jake indicates the
Friday and Sunday traffic at Onyx Market is good; stop by and
check out the numbers.
Kern Valley Growers Association will post on Facebook when we have the new OPEN MARKET certified permit in hand.
Every vendor wanting to sell at Onyx Farmers Market should be giving a copy of their resale permits, cottage food permits and growers certificates to the KVGA Board so that all they need to do is watch Facebook for the announcement of the first open day to sell.
The vendor paperwork (copies) can be dropped by the Lakeshore Market on any Sat. from 9-1 or mailed in to:

Congratulations to the Kern Valley Community and all our volunteers for supporting your local farmers markets and the certified growers in the Kern River Valley!
